Mental Health Champion statement omthe removal of the guidance on supporting transgender pupils from the Education Authority’s Website

In a statement released today, following the news the the Education Authority had removed guidance on supporting transgender pupils from their website the Mental Health Champion, Professor Siobhan O'Neill said:

I’m disappointed and concerned by the removal of guidance on support for transgender pupils from the EA website, and the accompanying policy statement.

This policy refers to a small minority of young people already likely to experience marginalisation and isolation. My fear is that this policy will negatively impact the mental health of these already vulnerable pupils and result in bullying. Research shows the importance of gender-affirming policies for inclusion and good mental health. Respecting the dignity and privacy of marginalised groups is also central to trauma-informed practice. Schools should continue to provide inclusive, compassionate environments so trans pupils feel safe and welcome.

I also urge the Department to support pupil mental health and address the effects of bullying by ensuring that all pupils have access to interventions in the Emotional Wellbeing in Education Framework.
