Mental Health Champion statement on future of CCEA GCSE, AS and A level qualifications

In a statement released today, the Mental Health Champion outlined her view on the Department of Education's proposed changes to CCEA GCSE, AS and A level qualifications following the consultation:

I am concerned about the Department of Education's proposals to remove AS levels and restrict the number of assessments, including internal and controlled assessments for GSCEs and A-Levels. These changes risk disadvantaging young people who experience poor mental health and may further embed existing inequalities.

Whilst it is positive that the breadth and content of these assessments will be reduced, the shift towards higher stakes exams, at the end of a two-year period of study restricts pathways for resitting examinations where needed, or demonstrating knowledge and understanding in alternative formats. As a reflection of performance under stress, the results could undermine fairness and disproportionately benefits those from more advantaged backgrounds. Young people consistently report that pressure at school contributes to poor mental health. The Department need to ensure that the mental health and wellbeing of young people is a priority in the current reforms.
